Pub chefs tempted to copy Gordon Ramsay's management techniques could land themselves with a hefty fine, say expert employment solicitors.

Gordon Ramsay's infamous tirades have been given a lot of publicity recently. He took on underperforming chefs in Channel Four's Kitchen Nightmares and then attempted to transform C-list celebrities into top chefs in ITV's Hell's Kitchen.

But pub chefs who are thinking of imitating his abusive management style have been warned to think again by Ray Silverstein, employment specialist and partner at solicitors Browne Jacobson.

"The demands for total obedience and absolute dedication that Gordon Ramsay makes as well as his frustration when things go wrong will strike a significant chord with many employers," he said.

"However while he may make colourful television, in no way are his barking dictatorial demands and insults viewed by employment tribunals as an acceptable way for bosses to treat their workers."

Kitchens are seen as hot-tempered places to work and many chefs have reputations for being sharp-tongued. In some busy pubs, where kitchens are often small and crowded, nerves can fray and angry outbursts are common.

But Mr Silverstein said chefs who are frustrated with their kitchen staff should be aware that employment rights are increasing.

"Employers need to treat employees without discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, sexual orientation or religion - plenty of Mr Ramsay's remarks would fall foul of regulations," he said.

And he warned that the maximum award for unfair dismissal so far has been £60,400. There is no limit on the amount of compensation that can be awarded if discrimination has occurred or if personal injury - a nervous breakdown for example - has happened because of the employer's actions.

And from October this year there will be more procedures in place for dealing with dismissals, disciplinary sanctions and grievances.

"Love it or hate it, Hell's Kitchen was all about entertainment. Gordon Ramsay was giving the viewers exactly what they wanted. However, any business that allows this sort of bullying will quickly end up in a very expensive soup. Hell's Kitchen was just a TV show. Do not let it become your business's reality."
