Disorder in the wake of England's Euro 2004 defeat will add fuel to Home Secretary David Blunkett's plans to crack down on problem pubs and bars.

One of the worst incidents saw the Portugese-owned Red Lion pub in Norfolk attacked by a mob after the England side exited the tournament after losing a penalty shootout to the host nation.

Eleven people were arrested for public order offences after missiles, including bottles, were thrown at the pub, in Thetford. One police officer was reported to have been injured.

Portugese familes, including children had been watching the match in the pub. They were trapped inside for around two hours, until the crowd was dispersed.

On Jersey, police in riot gear used CS gas to disperse crowds after an angry crowd clashed with opposition supporters from the island's large Portugese community. The mob was said to be trying to reach a Portuguese social club.

Disturbances were also reported by police in Croydon, Surrey and Boston, Lincolnshire - both scenes of trouble after the initial England game aganst France.

Hertfordshire police reported 17 arrests across the county In the two hours after the game, while 14 people were arrested in Wigan after police were called to break up a large fight.

In London, the Metropolitan Police chose the day of the match to launch Operation Optic, which will target dozens of pubs and bars across six London boroughs, seen as hotspots of alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder.

The operation will run across the summer, with a hit squad of police trained in public order working with local officers. On-the-spot fines will be handed out to drunk or violent offenders, with mobile prison cell vehicles touring the capital.

The Met have also pledged to use their powers to order closures of pubs linked to violence or under-age drinking.

The London initiative is part of the crackdown spearheaded by former US police chief Paul Evans, shipped in by Mr Blunkett from Boston to drive police action against the binge-drinking culture across the summer.
