INJURY TYPE:​ The burn PAIN FACTOR:​ 6/10 HOW DOES IT HAPPEN:​ Pots and pans are the most likely source of a scold. Left to conduct heat on the stove these items can become extremely risky to handle. The victim: A busy chef is a common casualty of a close encounter of the blistering kind as Craig Hoskins, chef at the Riverside Inn discovered during this month's battle of the chefs. The unfortunate Craig suffered a burnt finger from a pan whilst pouring a sauce onto a plate. BURN FACT:​ Around 30% of accidents in pub kitchens are burns. SYMPTOMS:​ Short sharp pain followed by a reddening of the affected area. The skin may also blister and leak fluid depending on the severity of the burn. TREATMENT:​ The burn should be immediately cooled with cold water according to first aid advice from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The injury should be submerged for up to 10 minutes. If you are in any doubt about the severity of the injury seek medical help immediately. Licensees should also record the time, date and details of the injury to improve the control of health and safety risks according to the HSE. UNUSUAL INJURY OF THE MONTH:​ Shark bite - Paul Smith, head chef at the Fountain Inn, near Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, was the victim of the first recorded in-land shark attack, The pub's pet shark Miami decided to feed on Paul's arm while Paul was feeding him. The attack generated fantastic press coverage.
