A team of top ghosthunters has descended on a pub in Somerset the hope of flushing out the spirits believed to haunt the premises.

It is believed that up to 18 ghosts have made The Choughs in High Street, Chard, their local since it was built in 1644.

Research shows that a man hanged himself in the attic of the building, which was a brothel before being transformed into a school and then a coaching inn. A 15-year old girl is understood to have poisoned herself on the site in 1844 after her mother, the madam of the brothel, tried to force her to become a prostitute.

TV presenter Yvette Fielding and spirit medium Derek Acorah, of Living TV show Most Haunted, spent the night at the pub with their investigative team to capture film of paranormal activity and experience the atmosphere for themselves. The same team spent the night at JW Lees' brewery in Manchester earlier this year.

The team were brought in by landlords Jason and Marie Baker, who have had the feeling they were not alone ever since taking over the Punch Taverns-owned pub two years ago. "We soon found out that the place was full of ghosts, men, women and children. They move things around and love hiding our keys, which is annoying, and we are always hearing footsteps in the corridor," he said.

The TV show will be aired in September.
