Sky is slashing the price of its Premiership Plus pay-per-view service for pubs by 50 per cent from December 3. The announcement follows complaints that some pubs were already being offered the discount, while others were being asked to pay more.

The broadcaster claimed some pubs had been offered the discount as part of an "initial trial" of the pricing structure before it was opened out across the trade.

The half-price deal follows widespread dismay from licensees before the beginning of the season, when Sky hiked its charges for the service by as much as four times after switching to a pricing structure based on rateable values.

"Following a successful trial offer, Sky is announcing that it is to offer pub and club customers a PremPlus season ticket at 50 per cent off to reflect the number of Barclays Premiership games already played," said a spokeswoman.

"The offer will be available to Sky's commercial pub and club customers from December 3 and is in time for the great line of matches throughout December and January."

Upcoming matches include: Chelsea v Newcastle (December 4), Everton v Liverpool (December 11) and Manchester United v Crystal Palace (December 18).
