A village freehouse, which was the Good Pub Guide's 2002 Cambridgeshire Dining Pub of the Year, has changed handsfor the first time in more than20 years.

The Chequers in Fowlmere had been run by Norman and Pauline Rushton for 24 years and enjoys a well established reputation for its food, attracting custom from an extensive catchment area.

It was sold to father and son Roger and Paul Beaumont off an asking price of £849,500 for the freehold interest through Christie & Co's Ipswich office.

The pub was substantially rebuilt and restored as a coaching inn following a fire in 1634 which destroyed many buildings in the village.

It features a 32-cover galleried restaurant, arranged over two floors, a split-level bar with an inglenook fireplace and a conservatory, which was added in 1990 and accommodates up to 30 covers.

There is three-bedroom owner's accommodation on the first floor.

Behind the property is a mature enclosed landscaped garden and a car park.

Bill Colquhoun, associate director of Christie & Co's Ipswich office, who handled the sale, said it "confirms the continued demand for high-quality freehouses in this region, following the recent sale of the Plough in Shepreth, a neighbouring village, upon which a sale completed in late July 2004.

"Competition remains keen for freehouses throughout East Anglia, not least along the M11 corridor, with Cambridge, Stanstead and easy access to London all major contributory factors."
