Many licensees believe pubs should take certain fish off the menu to protect dwindling stocks as it is feared that whole species of fish will become extinct unless Britain and other countries suspend all fishing in a number of sea zones.
Forty-one per cent of restaurant owners agreed they should stop selling fish in a recent online poll. John Collins of the Trout & Tipple, Tavistock, Devon, said: "We took cod off the menu because it has been listed as an endangered species."
Flyers could cost licence, hosts warned
Nightclubs and pubs which open late were threatened with the withdrawal of their licences this week for distributing street leaflets advertising the sale of alcohol.
The threat came from Aberdeen City licensing board, which investigated police complaints against Liquid, Espionage,Tiger Tiger, Machulu and the Triple Kirks. They were accused of breaching a condition on their entertainment licences which forbids street flyers referring to alcohol. No action was taken against the companies but the council's concerns were noted.
Stephens is new Wadworth director
Lloyd Stephens is the new tenanted trade director at Wiltshire brewer Wadworth. The new position carries a seat on the board. Stephens' career has taken in Pubmaster, Carlsberg Distributors and Grand Metropolitan. Chairman and managing director Charles Bartholomew said: "Lloyd brings with him a wealth of experience in our tenanted business, having been general manager for the past two years."
Millgate takes first Lees' quality mark
The Millgate in Failsworth, Lancashire, has been awarded the Beer Quality Mark by brewer JW Lees. The award was launched in January 2004 to improve the quality of cask ale across the brewer's 175-strong estate. The Millgate is the first pub to win the award. Seven similar awards will be made in the next month.
Guild is praised at Christmas lunch
More than 150 licensees attended the Guild of Master Victuallers' Christmas lunch at Charlton Athletic Football Club last week. The event was sponsored by BOC Sureflow, whose manager Stephen Haymes praised the Guild as a valuable body.
Len Fairclough's funeral next Monday
A well-known soft drink sales rep who worked until he was 84 has died aged 92. Len Charles Fairclough took out a half-page advert in the Morning Advertiser when he was made redundant aged 65. His funeral takes place at Guildford crematorium on Monday 20 December at 11am.
