The Trade and Industry Select Committee has criticised the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) for its current code of conduct.

After its lengthy investigation into the relationship between tenants and pubcos, the committee found the existing code lacking and suggested it should be "revised as a matter of urgency."

MPs argued that the code was last updated in 1997 and that the industry had changed since then. As part of the review it also recommended that a wide range of interested parties be consulted.

The code, which monitors pubcos, is now expected to include rent reviews, the role of BDMs, complaint and dispute procedures, disclosure and the availability of information and taking legal and professional advice by prospective tenants.

If the committee is not satisfied with the results it has urged the government to consider a legally binding code of practice with a statutory code.

Responding to the claims, Mark Hastings, director of communications for the BBPA, said: "The BBPA code of conduct is constantly under scrutiny and there will be a formal review planned for next year. I'm certain there won't be a need for the government to impose a statutory code.

"The committee findings show this is an industry facing rapid change and at the end of a lengthy and detailed enquiry it has found there are no competition issues for pubcos or brewers to answer to.

"This is a critical finding and is great news for the consumer and the industry as a whole."
