Police believe a fire at a Warwickshire pub was started deliberately.

Police said emergency services were called to the Lamplighter in Rother Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, at about 4am on Monday, after reports of a fire on the ground floor.

The building was filled with smoke. The two people living upstairs escaped on a fire ladder and were treated for smoke inhalation. Nobody was injured. Only minor damage was caused to the pub, police said.

Officers believe a rag may have been set alight and pushed through the letterbox, setting fire to the carpet.

Forensic officers have visited the pub to gather evidence.

Police probe blaze at Exmouth pub

Police investigating a fire at O'Malleys pub in Exeter Road, Exmouth, Devon, claim it was of "doubtful origin".

Police said CCTV camera operators spotted the blaze just before midnight last Thursday at the pub, which had been closed for two weeks.

One neighbour had to be evacuated from a nearby house, but nobody was injured.

The roof and first floor of the premises were severely damaged and it took eight fire appliances to halt the fire.

Police investigate 10-man brawl

A doorman at Yates's bar in West Street, Brighton, was allegedly glassed in a brawl that involved up to 10 men last Saturday.

Brighton police said three men were arrested, one for assault and two for criminal damage and assault, in connection with the incident, which took place at around 10.30pm. The men were later bailed.

Judge lambasts police in pub affray case

A man faces jail after he trashed a bar and injured a customer at a Cambridge pub. But his younger brother faces a re-trial after a judge labelled some police evidence "unbelievable" and "deliberately false".

Jonathan Kirby, 24, was found guilty of affray for his part in the brawl at the Sir Isaac Newton pub in Castle Street in July last year.

But the jury at Cambridge Crown Court last week did not come to a decision on his 19-year-old brother Aaron, who faced the same charge. The Crown Prosecution Service will now decide if there will be a re-trial.

The judge threw out a second charge of affray, relating to both brothers, of Milton Road, Cambridge, who clashed with police outside the pub.

The judge also threw out Aaron Kirby's charge of causing actual bodily harm to a police officer because of flawed police evidence.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth called for an investigation into what happened. He said: "There was no de-briefing, no co-ordination of evidence and total confusion ensued."

Jonathan Kirby was warned to expect jail and will be sentenced later. A third man, 19-year-old Fletcher Gatland of Edinburgh Road, Cambridge, admitted his role in the incident outside the pub and will also be sentenced later.

Man jailed for kicking customer in head

A man who kicked a pub customer in the head after knocking him to the ground at a pub in Bradford, West Yorkshire, has been jailed for two and a half years.

Steven Osbourne, 33, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent at Bradford Crown Court last month.

The court heard that Osbourne, of Allerton Close, Bradford, attacked Scott Boocock while they were sitting outside the Fleece pub in Allerton in August last year.

Witnesses said they saw Osbourne punch Boocock then kick him in the head when he was on the ground. The victim needed treatment for a fractured eye socket and received stitches on his nose and below the eye.

Austin Newman, defending, said it was a "spontaneous episode of violence" carried out "on the spur of the moment".

Judge Shaun Spencer said: "The fact is that you started a fight and when you were winning and when the man was in a helpless position you put the boot into him."
