A UK chef has created the world's best sandwich after beating 12 rival chefs at an international competition.

Edward Antonini was announced champion of the Délifrance International Sandwich Challenge in Lyon, France.

His winning entry of Spicy American Chicken Panini topped entries from Singapore, Lebanon, Spain and France, for its simplicity and unique combination of flavours.

Brian Turner, one of 13 judges on the international panel, said Antonini's sandwich has a great commercial future at home and abroad.

He said: "There's no room for snobbery in the British sandwich industry. Simplicity, quality of ingredients and the right blend of flavours, enhanced by a hot panini made Edward's sandwich a true international winner."

This is the UK's first win in the five-year history of the competition, which only this year extended to an international audience.

Antonini, restaurant manager of Baguette du Monde in Birmingham said: "We've sold over 5,000 of the sandwiches a week since I won the UK title. I can't believe I've topped so many of the international competitors it just shows that the right bread brings out the best in the simplest of ingredients."
