Spirit Group has been added to the list of pubcos hit by the Sudan 1 food contamination scare.

A batch of Jamaican jerk chicken supplied to the UK's biggest managed pub operator has been withdrawn. The product is on a list of 43 added by the Food Standards Agency, bringing the total to 580.

All were made with Worcester Sauce containing chilli powder coloured with the banned dye, supplied by Crosse & Blackwell brand owner Premier Foods.

Other products on the updated list likely to have been supplied to pubs include batches of brown sauce from Ukay Catering, and thousand island and caesar dressing from Hazelwood.

Frozen food from suppliers including Bird's Eye, Quinton Farm, Dawn Fresh and Windrush, and sauces from Questo and Hoes are also added. While most of these are likely to have been sold through retail stores, pubs should check the full updated list at www.food.gov.uk.

The FSA repeated its advice that there is no risk of "immediate" ill health, and said it is working with the industry and local authorities to ensure any remaining affected foods are removed from sale.

Spirit said that the Jamaican jerk chicken dish had been sold in around 30 pubs over the past year, and had already been dropped. Other affected products were recalled imediately.

Christian Rose, director of food for Spirit Group said: "Prior to receiving official recommendations from the FSA, Spirit Group acted promptly to withdraw the affected product.

"We have been working closely with our suppliers and are confident that all products have now been recalled."

How did the industry react to the Sudan 1 contaminate crisis? John Porter reports.
