A Barrow man fears his business and reputation will suffer as a result of a man with the same name being published on a list of banned drinkers by the town's Barwatch. Gary Holmes is concerned because his second-hand shop in Barrow Island bears his name. Barwatch has agreed to take the name off its list.

Dorset promotes cellar safety

Dorset Council held a cellar safety seminar this week in a bid to cut the number of accidents experienced by licensees. "Handling activities are the single largest cause of injuries and ill health in the food and drinks industries," said health and safety inspector Simon Edwards. "The most common cause is stacking and de-stacking containers, and this accounts for 53% of manual handling injuries."

Firestone pub lives up to name

The Firestone pub in Taunton, Somerset, reopened on Monday following a makeover by owners Pioneer. The outlet, formerly the Clarke's Tap, now boasts a stylish 60-seat dining area as well as a private dining room. New menu dishes include stone baked pizzas and sizzling dishes served from the oven on a hot firestone.

Grange Hill star takes over pub

Former Grange Hill star Peter Moran has taken over the lease of the Red Lion in Shepperton, London. Moran appeared in Grange Hill from 1980 to 1984 as loveable rogue and wheeler-dealer Pogo. He also later appeared in Star Wars.

As boys drink less girls drink more

The number of teenage boys drinking has fallen, according to the latest statistics from the Department of Health. A survey of 10,000 children aged 11 to 15 revealed that a total of 23% had drunk alcohol in the previous week compared to 25% the previous year. But while the number of boys drinking fell, the number of girls drinking increased to the same level for the first time.

Massive lines up wannabe stars

Patrick Olive from the legendary band Hot Chocolate will head the judging panel at Massive's Tup Idol karaoke competition. Wannabe stars will sing at seven heats at Massive venues around London prior to the final at Balham Tup on 11 May.
