Men deny double arson attack on pub

Two men have denied two arson attacks at a Derby pub.

Shane Barker and David Noble are accused of intentionally endangering the lives of licensees Christopher and Pauline Young by setting fire to the Waggon & Horses pub in Ashbourne Road on 2 and 8 June 2004.

Barker, 26, of Plimsoll Street, Derby, and Noble, 19, of Bedford Street, Derby, appeared at Derby Crown Court last week and also denied breaking into the pub between 10 and 15 June.

In addition Barker denied a charge of arson with intent to endanger the lives of Sharon Riley, her partner David Lawrence and her two sons, by setting fire to the door of another pub, the New Zealand Arms in Langley Street on 21 August.

Barker and Noble have been remanded in custody to stand trial on 1 August.

Children steal £444-worth of drinks

A gang of six children, thought to be aged between 10 and 13, broke into the cellar of a Lancashire pub and stole £444-worth of alcohol.

They made off with 12 crates of alcohol from the Shakespeare Hotel in Padiham, carrying the drinks from the pub in a wheelie bin.

They were spotted by customers when they returned for a second raid, and fled.

Their haul included 144 bottles of WKD, 30 bottles of Smirnoff Ice and four bottles of Mudshake.

The children had removed a cover and got into the cellar soon after 10pm on Monday last week.

Barmaid banned from all other town inns

A 20-year-old woman has been banned from every pub in Selby, North Yorkshire expect the one in which she works.

Barmaid Elizabeth Elliott assaulted four people in two pubs, Selby Magistrates Court was told last month.

As a result, she was given a six-month ban from all 23 pubs in Selby, except the Station Inn in Ousegate, where she currently works.

Elliott, of Ryedale Way, Brayton, admitted assaulting student Joanne Zdrenka on Thursday 4 November at the Griffin in Micklegate.

The court heard that Elliott hit Zdrenka on the side of her head in an unprovoked assault, causing swelling round the eyebrow.

In a separate incident, Elliott attacked Louise Milivojivicon Thursday 20 January at Bar PM in Water Lane. In this attack, Elliott punched the victim, causing her to trip on some stairs.

Milivojivic was punched again as she tried to get up, leaving her with a bruised and swollen eye. Elliott pleaded guilty to this attack as well.

On behalf of licensing officer Tim Grogan, Emma Pearce, prosecuting, asked magistrates to issue a banning order, banning Elliott from all pubs except the Station Inn.

Pearce also asked that two other attacks, also at Bar PM, be taken into consideration.

Elliott was ordered to pay £50 compensation to both Zdrenka and Milivojivic. She was given a nine-month community rehabilitation order and banned from the 22 pubs for six months.

Dennis Lofthouse, mitigating, said Elliott, who is working as a barmaid to support her young child, was remorseful about the attacks. He said the assaults were an "aberration" in her life.
