Licensee Barbara Forrest from the Lion & Lamb in Leeds, has been named as Britain's Most Hospitable Pub Landlady at House Beautiful magazine's Unsung Community Hero Awards 2004.

The accolade and £1,000 prize money thanked Barbara for taking her role in their community above and beyond serving up a great pint. Licensee at the pub for the last four years she turned the pub, which had a bad reputation, into a welcoming place to socialise as well as helping elderly customers with the their bills and assisting customers get re-housed.

House Beautiful's editor, Kerryn Harper, said: "A pub is often the focal point of a town or village, which makes the landlord or landlady a linchpin in any community. "But Barbara Forrest is much more than just the face behind a great pint. The way she single-handedly turned a pub with a very bad reputation into a welcoming refuge, standing up to local bullies in the face of threats and physical attack is quite simply awe inspiring and an inspiration to us all."
