How was trade over the sizzling weekend?

'Food sales were down because it was too hot to eat. We ordered a barbecue but it only arrived on Monday, otherwise our food sales would have been better. Drink sales weren't too bad but there were a lot of other things going on in the village. There was a summer solstice party at one pub and I think a lot of people went there. Friday was really busy but on Sunday people tended to have barbecues at home.

'We've got a big beer garden so we were well up; trade was double even on Monday. We always look forward to good beer garden weather here. Our lighter beers have generally been selling better. It's been the paler ones that people have been going for in this weather.

'It was very good. We find that when the sun comes out we do get more visits, but when it really gets hot, they often go elsewhere. We put on a barbecue that went really well. But takings were probably slightly down on last year, which is strange. We need it to be really sunny during the week and cloudy at the weekend as people come into the town to do their shopping; when it's sunny they tend to go to the beach.

'In Brighton we had the added bonus of the London to Brighton bike ride on Sunday. Trade was fantastic. Around 150,000 people descended on Brighton so we all did well from that. People were here early so we did quite a few breakfasts. We were probably up around 20%. But I wasn't actually here this weekend I was watching U2.
