Satellite broadcaster Sky has won a case against licensees who showed sport at their pub on their domestic contract. Sky staff noticed that the Sky pint glass emblem was missing from the screen at the White Swan in Crook, County Durham. Hosts John and Gwen Varley were ordered to pay Sky £8,265.72 when they appeared at Clerkenwell County Court in London last week.

Petition lands Thirsk pub its PEL

A pub has been granted its public entertainment licence after 179 people signed a petition. The Lord Nelson in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, will now be able to host live bands on the condition that they soundproof the venue and no more than 26 acts perform each year. Residents had expressed fears that the move could lead to noise and disorder.

Surge in trade for Leisure Link

Gaming and leisure machine operator Leisure Link is to roll out another 2,000 machines at pubs and bars. The extra machines will go to JD Wetherspoon, Yates and Greene King pubs. Leisure Link will also supply all McMullen and EP pubs and 70% of the Laurel estate that use machines.

New leader for BII Scotland

A former deputy clerk to the Aberdeenshire Licensing Board has been appointed head of BII Scotland. Janet Hood will start on 4 July, when she aims to 'hit the ground running by attending the first meeting of Scotland's National Licensing Forum. BII Scotland will be rolling out BIIAB qualifications developed specifically for Scotland.

Coventry aims to end flyposting

Coventry City Council is urging pubs and clubs to adopt a code of practice aimed at eliminating flyposting or face big fines. The code encourages licensees to get promoters to sign a form indicating that they will not use flyposters. Licensees are also urged to demand a deposit from promoters that is only refundable if illegal posters are not used.

Clampdown in Colwyn Bay

People who cause trouble in shops in a north Wales town could also find themselves banned from pubs in the same town. The scheme, which is being brought in at Colwyn Bay, will also see troublemakers banned from shops in the town of Llandudno, five miles away.

A mother who bit of part of another woman's ear in a Hull pub has been told she faces jail. Patricia Cook, 33, of Marfleet Lane, east Hull, attacked Angela Frankland in Cheeky Monkeys bar in Paragon Square in February, Hull Crown Court heard this week. Cook bit Frankland after she asked the victim if she had been talking about her. Sentencing was adjourned until September, but judge John Dowse told Cook: 'As I see at the moment, you are going to

jail.
