Wychwood Brewery brought its new limited-edition ale to the GBBF a 4.2% abv fruity ale called Battle Axe.

Wychwood's head brewer Jeremy Moss said: 'I wanted to brew a late summer ale which would be big on fruit and big on flavour to really hit the spot.

He said the beer's pumpclip was also designed to 'pull no punches, featuring a female warrior in the mould of an armoured Queen Boadicea.

The beer is available to the on-trade throughout August and September.

Brains launched Taff End cask ale at the GBBF, as a celebration of its ongoing sponsorship of Glamorgan County Cricket Club.

The beer was named after the eastern end of Sophia Gardens, which is the home of Glamorgan County Cricket. Brewed using Saaz hops, it is a golden ale designed to give a refreshing bitterness.

Brains sales and marketing director Richard Davies said: 'People from all over Wales follow the fortunes of Glamorgan and I am confident that Taff End will be popular with customers in pubs across the country. We were delighted to take the new ale to this year's GBBF so that it could be introduced to an ever-wider range of cask-ale drinkers outside of our heartland.

Brains has been Glamorgan's main sponsor since 2001.

Thwaites used the GBBF to launch premium dark Bavarian beer König Ludwig Dunkel on the UK market.

The beer is being rolled out within the 438-strong Thwaites pub estate from this month, as well as in more than 1,000 freeholds in the north. It will be launched in 330ml bottles before Christmas the company is currently designing packaging suitable for the UK market.

While the bottle will remain the same as the original Bavarian version, the label will be altered to use an 'over-the-top Germanic font, as well as a brief description explaining what the beer is.

Thwaites brands marketing manager Lee Williams said: 'We are altering the font, but we are not in any way trying to distance the beer from its Bavarian heritage. The imagery is still all about Bavaria.
