With the Hesket Brewery located at the end of the pub's garden, customers never worry about running out of beer. And the range is eclectic, ranging from Helvellyn Gold to Great Cockup Porter, from Catbells Special to Doris' 90th Birthday Ale produced specially for the brewer's mother-in-law.

The small rustic country pub, which is owned by a co-operative of more than 100 locals, consists of two tile-floored bars. The lounge bar has a real fire in it and the public bar sports a pool table and jukebox.

Lessee Lou Hogg, who runs the pub with his wife, Linda, says: 'We're a small village pub, so people like to come here for the atmosphere. We are always pleasant and friendly to everyone as I know from past experience as a customer, the reception you get from someone behind the bar can either make or break your day.

The couple have run the pub for the past two years and as it's their first pub, Lou says they have worked hard to make it work. Yet in this short amount of time, Prince Charles has already managed a visit. As well as the occasional royal visit, there are also regular events to raise money for charity, which have included a 'Mr and Mrs night where couples are put in different rooms and asked questions about their partner. The winners are the couple who answer the most correct questions. There was also a sponsored waxing session held inside the pub, during which Lou had his legs and chest waxed, something he says he's still suffering from.

Lou emphasises that the pub is not a gastro pub, but one that serves simple pub food. The pub is well-known, however, for its Indian curries.

Set in the Lakes, the pub attracts a number of fell-walkers and beer lovers, who can book in advance to arrange a tour of the brewery.
