A Grade-II listed pub that stands beside the oldest surviving bridge on the River Thames has been placed on the market.

The Maybush Inn, set in the hamlet of Newbridge, Oxford-shire, is on the banks of the Thames next to the New Bridge itself, which was built by monks around 1250, according to its selling agent.

Stewart Harkness, of the Milton Keynes office of Christie & Co, said: 'This local landmark is one of the most beautiful old bridges in Britain today, with six pointed arches over the river and six over the causeway.

'The pub is well known for its home-cooked food and attracts river traffic as well as walkers using the Thames long-distance path, which runs through the garden and past the front door of the pub.'

Built of stone, the pub has large, riverside trade gardens and private moorings. It is in a countryside setting on the A415 between Witney and Abingdon, 14 miles from Oxford.

The Maybush Inn has been refurbished and extended over the past four-and-a-half years by its owners, Brian and Lesley Ward, who now wish to pursue other challenges.

Harkness added: 'This is a superb country pub which has character, an excellent reputation and a stunning riverside setting.'

The property has a traditional bar with original features and a modern 38-cover restaurant.

The gardens include a 72-cover patio area for alfresco dining beside the river.

A vegetable garden produces fresh ingredients for the menu and there are two car parks at opposite sides of the bridge.

Christie & Co is seeking offers of £260,000 for the remaining 12 years of the current lease.
