A controversial 2,310-capacity nightclub in Nottingham finally closed its doors a few days before Christmas.

The Works, which opened in May 2001 after a £4m investment, had its licence revoked in September after police claimed 14-year-olds had been served at the venue. The club remained open pending an appeal due to be heard early this year.

Its owner, the Nightclub Company, which has been placed in administration, closed the venue rather than face the expense of an appeal.

Peter Welsh, operations director for the company, said: 'The Works' issues have been widely reported over the last few months, and I regret that recent events have blemished an excellent reputation.'

Other operators are known to be looking at the site.

A source told the Morning Advertiser: 'The police in Nottingham are very supportive of somebody else going in to operate the site.'

Chief Constable for Nottinghamshire, Steve Green, has, however, pledged to cut the capacity of the city's pubs and clubs by 5,000.
