Fuller's decision to close the Gales brewery in Horndean following its takeover of the Hampshire brewer has been accepted by licensees.

The announcement will see Gales brands such as HSB, Butser and Festival Mild and Prize Old Ale brewed at Fuller's brewery in Chiswick and has led to howls of protest from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

But despite this and Fuller's plans to discontinue Gales Bitter, Gales licensees have told The Publican that while the decision is "sad" they are keen to get on with business.

Graham Mallett, licensee of the Robin Hood in Havant, said: "It could have been worse. We've been taken over by a family concern with a decent flagship ale.

"The whole situation is very sad - I've been with Gales for 23 years. And I feel for the people who have lost their jobs.

"But I think I'd have taken the £2m [former Gales managing director] Nigel Atkinson was offered."

Ann-Marie Goodrick, licensee of the Eastgate in Chichester, said: "If HSB is not brewed to the same standards my drinkers will let me know straight away.

"But to be honest our customers are all looking forward to us stocking a better range of beers."

John O'Leary, licensee of the Square Brewery in Petersfield, is concerned, however.

"We have a loyal set of HSB drinkers and I feel that we will take a hit from the changes," he said.

Fuller's has tried to keep Gale's licensees well informed, as well as inviting them on a tour of the Chiswick brewery, where they were able to meet senior members of the company.

But CAMRA chief executive Mike Benner said: "We're appalled at the decision.

"Thousands of supporters rallied behind the Wessex branches of CAMRA when the Save Gales campaign was launched.

"Fuller's has brushed aside the public concern and continued with its agenda."
