Every household in Scotland is to receive a leaflet with a hotline number to grass up premises allowing rogue smoking.
Scottish ministers hope the hotline will help them police the ban which comes into effect on March 26.
One of the biggest criticisms of the smoking ban is the difficulties envisaged in enforcing it but it appears Scotland is relying on non-smokers grassing up 'smoke dens'.
IrelandThe scheme is modelled on a similar hotline in Ireland, where a smoking ban started in 2004.
It averages around 30 to 40 calls a week.
Most complaints are followed up by a premises visit within 24 hours.
The Scottish hotline, officially titled the national compliance line, will go live on March 26 using the number 0845 130 7250.
A call centre will take statements and pass them to local authorities to investigate.
But this may only happen the day after the complaint, especially in the case of pubs and bars. Your CommentsLiz Barber via email 10:58am 08/03/06
"Nasty, Nazi, nasty. Smoking may be distasteful to some people, but is this what we want as a solution? This is not how we do things in this counrty - is it?Robert Feal-Martinez via email 12:20pm 07/03/2006
"It is truly dispicable when Government sets citizen against citizen. The Scottish Executive should step back from what can only be described as a Nazi like action.
This will destroy families, friendships and most importantly lives. The demonisation of smokers by a Smoking Ban is bad enough. Encouraging this form of action is sickening in a Democratic Society, who will be next, shopping obese people. Painting stars on doors to identify smokers. Sound familiar."To comment on this story email us by clicking this link
