The campaign to celebrate St George's Day has received a boost with more brewers getting on board.

More than 2,000 Greene King pubs ranging from managed, tenanted and freetrade, are celebrating the saint's day by running a poster and hat campaign with Greene King IPA.

Oxfordshire brewer Hook Norton is launching its own ale called 303AD, commemorating the year of the martyr's death.

It is calling for Sunday, April 23 to be a day of celebration of the diversity and richness of English culture.

Members of the CAMRA/Hook Norton complimentary club will visit the brewery on the day to celebrate the life of St George with a glass of 303AD and a roast beef sandwich.

Young's Brewery, meanwhile, is serving its St George's Ale on draught in pubs in celebration.

The brewers are supporting the Publican and Charles Wells initiative to make St George's Day a special day. Last week The Daily Telegraph also lent support by launching a competition for a pub to win £5,000 to celebrate with a party on the day.

Sarah McGhie, spokeswoman for Charles Wells, said: "It's absolutely brilliant that everyone has started to see that beer drinkers across the UK want to go to the pub and celebrate all the best things about being English."

Justin Adams, managing director of Greene King Brewing Company, said: "What better way is there to spend a great British occasion than in a great British pub with a great British pint of beer?"

Hook Norton managing director James Clarke said: "We celebrate saints of Ireland, Scotland and Wales - Patrick, Andrew and David - but now is the time that we celebrate St George."
