California staff shine bright
Customer service, determination and sheer hard work has seen the team at the California Country Inn in Modbury, South Devon, nominated for Proud of Your Staff this week. Licensee Tony Bell bought the pub two years as a freehold and since then has transformed it into a thriving business.
The previous three owners had all been unable to make a go of the pub, seeing it go bankrupt on each occasion.
But Tony, with the support of his 24-strong team, is helping the pub go from strength to strength - with an entry in the AA pub guide and a Cask Marque award.
"Through their determination we have completely changed the fortunes of the pub," said Tony.
"We really pride ourselves on our customer service, which is second to none. Nothing is ever too much trouble for my staff and they always go the extra mile."
Tony, who has 28 years experience in the trade, is particularly proud of the way the pub has improved its Christmas offering.
"In our first year we served around 500 meals, but last year we did more than 1,000 and really pulled out all the stops," he said.
Tony reserves particular mention for his head chef Tim Whiston.
"He's done a great job in promoting the food side of the pub and has been a real driving force," Tony added.
