Police warn pubs over ID scam

Youngsters in Nottingham have been using nail vanish to alter the date on provisional driving licences in order to buy alcohol from pubs.

About 12 minors have been caught using doctored driving licences in the city in recent weeks, the Morning Advertiser can reveal.

A classic technique has been to alter the date of birth to read 1986 instead of 1988 so it appears they are old enough to buy alcohol.

Police have been alerted to the issue by vigilant licensee, doorstaff and bar staff at pubs and clubs in Nottingham.

Insp Paul Winter, local area commander for the city centre, said: "We are seeing more and more cases of teenagers doctoring their driving licences in a crude attempt to fool door and bar staff that they are over 18.​

"They might think it's harmless and they're not doing hurting anybody but forging documents is serious. Since February more than a dozen have been caught doing this, thanks to the vigilance of licensees."

A number of the youths have been hit with £80 fines and Insp Winter said they would continue to prosecute youngsters.

"We come down hard on bar staff serving under-18s and it would be unfair to allow teenagers who fake ID to get away with it,"​ he said.

Police have said they will hold talks at schools to encourage children not to forge IDs.
