When the Crofters in Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria closed for three months last year it could have lost many of its customers for good.

But licensee Maggie Pattinson says that the hard work and application of her staff has meant the refurbished pub is now trading better than ever before, and recently came second in a regional competition.

Maggie is nominating her 14-strong team, who include English workers, Slovakian workers and one Estonian, for Proud of Your Staff this week.

"They never complain about the work, whether they are cleaning out ashtrays, washing glasses or serving customers. They are very professional and I wouldn't swap any one of them for the world," she says. "They've all done Diageo ESP courses and they are all keen to learn as much as possible while they are on the job. Three of them are taking NVQs."

The pub can cater for 300 people in the outside grounds, as well as 70 inside. As such it needs workers who can keep their cool during what can be very hectic afternoon and evening shifts, particularly in the summer months.

The staff are helping raise the standards not just in the Crofters, but in the whole town, says Maggie: "Barrow-in-Furness hasn't got the best reputation, but the money that has been ploughed into this town over the past 10 years has been colossal," she adds. "With the pub we are really helping to fly the flag."
