Pubs across the country are looking forward to celebrating St George's Day on April 23.

Two out of three licensees (64 per cent) are planning events in their pub, according to a poll on thePublican.com.

But how much do pub customers know about it? As the week of celebrations for the patron saint of England gets under way we've been out to see what the public has to say about it.

  • Phil Orrell, 28, internet editor:

"I won't be celebrating it. I will probably just be walking around town with my girlfriend.

"I know he is the patron saint of England and he killed a dragon somewhere. St Patrick's Day has got a bigger marketing force behind it and a huge publicity campaign.

"The Irish have more of a cultural identity. Are we proud to be English? I'm not sure."

Alex Campbell, 33, IT worker:

"I know that St George's Day is the end of April and I know St George killed a dragon and he is the patron saint of England. The Irish celebrate St Patrick's Day in such a big way and Irish people are more patriotic than us. St George's Day is a bigger thing up north, in places like Yorkshire. London is more of a melting pot culturally, so it's less of a big deal here."

Jo Laurie, 21, PA:

"I would celebrate it if Britain did as a whole. We were talking about this on St Patrick's Day... we are a bit too pre-occupied with being the UK, rather than being very English."

Stuart Long, 46, railway accounts clerk:

"St George was a Christian crusader in the middle of the Muslim territories.

"I never really celebrate St George's Day, I am aware of it though."

Craig Cook, 42, railways accounts clerk:

"I don't celebrate it. I celebrated St Patrick's Day though, but that was on a Friday so I would probably have been out anyway. I wore a big Irish hat!"

Marta Brenzica, 26, barmaid:

"I will probably celebrate St George's Day but it depends on the weather, and whether or not I will be working.

"St Patrick's Day has more advertising but St George's Day doesn't have enough publicity. Usually here at the pub it's very quiet on St George's Day."
