The Government's controversial Health Bill looks set to pass through the House of Lords today on its way to becoming law.

The Bill, which contains the proposed legislation on the smoking ban in England will get its Third Reading today.

A spokesman for the House of Lords said it was unlikely the process would take longer than one day and would mean the Bill would then be sent back to the House of Commons to be agreed.

If the MPs in the Commons agree the ammendments made by the Lords the Bill will next have to receive Royal Assent before becoming law.

The Third Reading of the Health Bill is expected to start at around 3.30pm today.

Your comments

Douglas Deakin via email, 04/07/2006As I have made my comments very clear in the past, on this subject, I will not dwell any further on the matter as no amount of hullaballoo will change the situation.

When the smoking ban comes into place our club will close.

I would like to say to all those overpaid MPs who sit in the Palace of Westminster with their brandy and cigars: THANK YOU from all our members.

Robert Feal-Martinez via email 04/07/2006"Every single publican should be aware that if the third reading goes ahead and is sent back for Royal Assent tomorrow that will mean clause 4, has not been re-examined. I find it staggering that even at this stage that the Trade bodies and pubco's haven't even expressed concern about the very real possibility, if not certainty that the ban will quickly be extended. Ian Wilmore of ASH stated on this very site that HMG were not going to extend, and yet we know ASH is pushing HMG behind the scenes to do just that."
