An east London licensee who hopes to provide accommodation at her pub in time for the 2012 Olympics is backing the Morning Advertiser's call to scrap the Government's proposed "bed tax".

This comes as the Conservative Party launches its campaign against the planned tax, suggesting that the proposal will particularly affect those venues that are providing a service in tourist areas.

Punch tenant Janet Dooner has emailed three local MPs urging them to sign the early day motion (EDM) opposing the bed tax plan. EDMs are used by MPs to flag up issues of concern.

Dooner plans to add 10 or 11 rooms at the Railway Tavern, Stratford, east London, in time for the London Olympics.

"My public house is right opposite the Olympic Village. We have just submitted a proposal to change upstairs to letting accommodation," said the licensee.

"If this bed tax plan goes through, we will have to pass on the tax to our guests."

Dooner has yet to hear from the MPs, who are away on summer recess.

Conservative shadow culture minister Hugo Swire has labelled the proposal a "bed and breakfast stealth tax", arguing that it will deter lower-income families from going on holiday in Britain.

The MA is calling on the trade to urge their MPs to sign the EDM.

Referring to EDM number 2232, hosts should explain how the tax would affect their business adversely and highlight ways in which tax and red tape are already inflicting a massive burden on those working within the trade.
