The Sun and the Daily Mirror have picked up on warnings issued by the on-trade about cheap supermarket booze.

A story in today's Mirror quotes the Scottish & Newcastle submission to the Competition Commission click here for original story and combines it with a warning from the British Beer and Pub Association.

Mark Hastings, BBPA director of communications, is quoted as saying: "The growing presence of the supermarkets on the High Street, through convenience stores, means a significant amount of town centre drinking is due to sales from their chiller cabinets.

"This bargain basement approach does not seem consistent with the need to promote responsible drinking."

The Sun even quotes someone from the charity Alcohol Concern who says: "There's some evidence that the price of alcohol impacts on consumption, particularly among vulnerable groups like young people and problem drinkers.

"Alcohol is a dangerous substance. It's not just like tins of beans where you stack them high and sell them cheap."

Even the Daily Mail - not a traditional friend of the on-trade - has the story.

Your CommentsPeter Harvey, via email, 15/08/2006About time too, how long has it taken the pub crunching media to get to the truth, too long, hey you never know they may catch on to all the foreign workers in this country sending there money back home soon thats another reason we are in a mess.

Robert Feal-Martinez, via email, 16/08/2006Don't you just love how the trade organisations play catch, so Mark Hastings, says supermarkets are a major cause of the problem. Well, well, well we didn't know that did we. Perhaps if the Puco's and their spokes people were just a tad more Pro-Active, rather than reactive then we at the sharp end would not be in dispair about who proports to speak for us. The spokespersons still haven't explained why Pubco's etal have given 12 million to Drinkaware whose clear intention is to 'screw' pubs and clubs just as ASH have done over smoking. Or will we hear Mark Hastings in 3 years time saying that they 'now realise supporting drink aware was a bad idea'.
