Bar staff see benefits of smoke ban
According to a Cancer Research survey, Scottish bar workers believe the smoke ban has had a positive impact on their health.

A survey carried out by Cancer Research has found a majority of Scottish bar staff feel the smoke ban has had a positive impact on their health.

The poll of 545 workers revealed that three-quarters thought the legislation would improve their health in the long term.

Professor Gerard Hastings, director of the charity's Centre for Tobacco Control Research at Stirling University, said: "This is great news."

According to the survey, younger people were even more positive about the health implications.

A whopping 82% of 18 to 29-year-olds claimed their workplace was now healthier compared to 67% of over-50s.

Your CommentsRobert Feal-Martinez via email 11/09/2006"Yet another fallacious survey from Cancer Research UK. Freedom to Choose have shown how easily it is to 'rig' one of their surveys. Even when they use an outside polster CRU set the ground rules, these surveys do not tell the truth, they merely compound the lies being told about the smoking ban and ETS. Why do you think ASH, CRU, HMG, DoH, SCOTH etal refuse point blank to debate with us. Why doesn't any one in the media have the courage to ask them and publish their response or is it true what is said about the media like Justice if you have enough money you can buy your version of 'the truth'. It certainly seems that way with the millions pump into the Anti Smoking propoganda machine macine stories like this proliferate. Why do the media continue to publish this rubbish."

Robert Feal-Martinez via email 11/09/2006"Further to my last post, just a cursory investigation of this CRU so called survey, reveals it was conceived and delivered by The Tobacco Control Research Centre at Stirling University it is sponsored and in partnership with CRU and surprise surprise The Scottish Department of Health. The members of this group are statisticians aberly qualified to destort their findings based on the requirements of the Scottish Executive. I've asked for the data. Hands up those who think I will get it."

Sharon Donald via email 13/09/2006"What I would like to know is why Cancer Research who collect money from the public is spending this money on reams of surveys and giving thousands of pounds to ASH every year. People who give to Cancer Research expect that money to be spent on exactly that research into all cancers, not propaganda exercises and surveys about smoking or ETS. Someone ought to report this charity for misappropriation of funds and obtaining money by deceiption from the public. I no longer donate to Cancer Research for exactly that reason."

Does the survey include responses from the ex-staff of closed Bingo Halls who are prevented from enjoying the clean air in their people-free ex-workplaces?"
