Doorman loses licence because of CCTV evidence

The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has, for the first time, revoked a doorman's SIA licence despite the absence of a criminal conviction.

Following two incidents captured on CCTV outside Springbok Trekkers Nightclub in Southport police asked the SIA to revoke a door supervisor licence held by Benjamin Critchley of Carrfield Avenue, Liverpool.

The licence was revoked but Critchley appealed against the decision.

Magistrates at North Sefton viewed the footage and agreed with police and the SIA that, in his role as a door supervisor, Critchley used excessive force was not a fit and proper person to hold an SIA licence.

Critchley did not exercise his right to appeal to a higher court.

Lucia Howland, SIA Head of Investigation, Northern said:

"An aim of the SIA is to increase public trust and confidence in the private security industry by setting standards of probity and professionalism. We will continue to work with our partners in the police to ensure that only trained, qualified and importantly - fit and proper people work in these positions of trust."

Sgt Nicholas Cowell of Sefton Police licensing unit said:

"We are delighted with this result and it sends out a strong message to security firms and their employees.

This security employee had his licence revoked after it was deemed he was a threat to public safety.

"With the importance of our night-time economy and the growth in the number of visitors coming to the town, it is crucial that the staff on the front line of that industry help to provide a safe environment in which visitors and residents can enjoy all that Southport has to offer.

"Security guards must ensure that they provide a professional service."
