How it works: The pub took its commitment to using local produce one step further by hosting its very own farmers' market in the pub car park. The first event in July attracted hundreds of visitors to the remote Herefordshire inn and was so successful that the pub repeated it in September, with plans for more in the future.

The market featured 20 stalls selling items such as meat, fruit, vegetables, cheeses, chocolate, organic brews, honey, handmade Scotch eggs, and cider and perry from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire areas.

Chef/proprietor Brent Castle says: "Its a great event for our village, locals and suppliers, and a fantastic business opportunity to promote what the pub provides to an audience that is aware of food sourcing and traceability.

"We're very fortunate that the market is also supported by Herefordshire County Council, which is very proactive in promoting producers in our area and supplies the stalls free of charge."

At the July event, Brent devised a special farmers' market menu to showcase the produce available. As well as this, Brent and his chefs hosted a Ready, Steady, Cook-style demonstration, cooking produce from each of the farmers' market stalls.

According to Brent, several traders at the market commented that the event was attended by a far more enthusiastic audience than at the markets held in town centres.

He said: "It's been such a success that we're already planning something for Christmas along the lines of the big Christmas markets you get in Germany, with local produce and crafts from the Herefordshire and Worcestershire areas."
