Mark Slann and Vicki Edwards-Slann of Strutts in Derby were crowned top newcomers after doubling their annual sales target at the Pathfinder Pubs retail awards.

The pair won a £1,000 cash prize and £250 for a staff day out at a ceremony for licensees of the Wolverhampton & Dudley managed arm at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull.

"When we arrived two years ago, the pub was very tired," said Slann.

"We're on the town's outskirts but have created a community atmosphere with a pool, darts, bungee jumps, sumo wrestling and trips abroad."

The top award of retail managers of the year went to Liz Owen and Joanne Fieldsend of the Red Hawk in Brough, east Yorkshire, who each received a holiday worth £3,000 and £1,000 spending money.

Kevin and Janat Connor of the Red Lion in Withington, Manchester won the lifetime

achievement award.

"This year's awards have been incredible and have given us the ideal opportunity to honour those who have raised the bar," said managing director Derek Andrew.
