A Bradford couple say they earned just £62 between them in a year as pub managers with Pubs 2B Inn at the Black Horse in Hellifield, Yorkshire.

Pauline and Brian Parker were given notice to quit the pub by Pubs 2B Inn after they applied for a job at a nearby social club to stave off bankruptcy.

The couple were recruited to work at the pub by rogue recruitment company Inn Direct, which was wound up in the public interest by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on 26 July this year.

The pair paid Watertight, a holding company listing Edward McGhee and Stephen Ford as directors, the sum of £5,000 on 2 June 2004.

Edward McGhee has received a 10-year ban from holding any directorships or managerial positions following involvement with rogue firms Greyfriars Taverns, Tudor Inns and Barber Lettings, which were wound up by the DTI in 2005.

If we had £100 a week left between us, we had done wellPubs 2B Inn licensee Pauline Parker

The Parkers were made to wait 15 months by Inn Direct before they were placed in a pub - the Black Horse in Hellifield, Yorkshire, with Pubs 2B Inn.

They were paid 20% of takings at the pub, which took £3,000 a week at best.

"We had to pay staff from our wages," said Pauline Parker.

"If we had £100 a week left between us, we had done well.

"Most weeks we made a loss - I remember earning just 18p one week. We've lost about £6,000 overall and I'm close to being bankrupt."

Pubs 2B Inn's Ford, who also runs the Lonely Pub Company, said: "I have spent a lot of money on that pub including putting in a kitchen and refurbishing seven bedrooms.

"They are good people doing a good job but I want people there who are 100% committed."
