My New Pub, The White Hart, Modbury

Pub company Wykeham Inns has purchased the leasehold interest for an undisclosed sum. Operations director Alan Knight said the White Hart, their fourth project, will aim to become a successful food-led outlet like their three other pubs.

The pubco purchased the White Hart at the beginning of October and will spend a month or so refurbishing the outlet.

"Our other pubs have won AA rosettes, Les Routiers Dining Pub of the Year awards, entries into the Michelin Guide and the Good Pub Guide and we want the White Hart to do so as well.

"When looking for new pubs, we look for places where we believe we can put in good food-led operations," said Knight.

He added that Wykeham is interested in quality buildings, quality food and value for money. The White Hart is owned by a local farmer and lease was purchased in a private deal, rather than through an agent. The pub features a 40-cover restaurant, five letting rooms and 100-capacity function suite.

"We hope the wet/dry split will become 35/65 - as we are a food-led group. This would have been similar to the previous lessees.

"Our theme for the White Hart will be British with a Mediterranean twist, which we believe will differentiate us from local competition."

The pub will now be open all day to encourage passing trade and also features 120 cover function room.

"We shall also look to compete with Plymouth-based establishments for corporate functions," added Knight.
