A Burnley pub has struck a blow for home made food by winning two out of three awards in the Best Pub Sausage category at the Foodservice Sausage of the Year 2006 finals.

Kevin Berkins, licensee of the Fence Gate Inn, has set up a dedicated sausage making facility at the pub. A qualified master butcher, Kevin's dedication to the art of the sausage saw him win first prize with his pork and black pudding sausage, while Owd Lancastrian, made to a traditional local recipe, won third prize.

"It seems everyone loves sausages," said Kevin. "We've been serving great home made food at the Fence Gate for years, but since we started making the sausages we've been getting a lot more publicity."

Second prize in the Best Pub Sausage went to Cheshire based H Clewlow Butchers, with the pork and herb Dabbler Sizzler sausage.

The Foodservice Sausage of the Year competition is run by the British Pig Executive (BPEX). The Best Pub Sausage category, launched this year, was run in conjunction with The Publican. Sausages had to have been served on a pub menu to qualify, and the category attracted almost 50 entries, which were judged in a blind tasting by a panel from The Publican.

The overall Foodservice Sausage of the Year, judged on the day by the 15 finalists from across all five categories, as well guest form across the food industry, is the Low Salt Pork Sausage from the Country Butcher, based in Gloucestershire.

The Fence Gate is also a finalist in three categories at the Pub Food Awards 2006, with Kevin's bangers seeing him into the Food Innovation and Local Food Champion categories, while the pub's home made puds saw it win through to the Dessert Pub of the Year shortlist. The overall winners will be announced at the Savoy in London on November 8.
