The first pub to go 'carbon neutral'
A Punch host plans to make his pub the first in England to go "carbon neutral".
Solar panels, a wind turbine and more recycling are among the ideas proposed for the Golden Lion in Ashton Hayes, Chester.
It is part of a drive to make Ashton Hayes England's first carbon neutral village. To achieve carbon neutral status, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced where possible. Non-reducible emissions must be off-set through a renewable energy supply.
The Ashton Hayes Going Carbon Neutral project is working with Golden Lion host Barry Cooney to help cut emissions.
Plans include using low-energy lighting, burning logs on open fires, solar panels on the roof to heat water and a wind turbine to generate power.
Recycling will be stepped up and local food suppliers will be used to reduce emissions from transporting goods.
"Energy costs are one of the biggest overheads facing today's licensees and if going carbon neutral will help me cut my energy bills, that's fine by me," said Cooney.
