Brewer Daniel Thwaites is to launch a commemorative ale called 'Double Century' as part of its bi-centenary celebrations.

The beer, created by head brewer Steve Fielding and 4.8 ABV in cask and 5.2 in bottles, is the result of appeals from Thwaites customers who felt a special brew should be made to mark 200-years of brewing.

Daniel Thwaites brands marketing manager Lee Williams said: "When we began conducting research the first thing we found was a general affection for Thwaites and a ringing endorsement for a commemorative ale to mark the two hundred years.

What we found was a general affection for Thwaites and a ringing endorsement for a commemorative ale to mark the two hundred yearsDaniel Thwaites brands marketing manager Lee Williams.

"Steve Fielding has created a fantastic beer.

"Double Century has real 'drinkability'' and although it will be initially launched as a product for the 200th anniversary, early feedback suggests it could be a long-term success for Daniel Thwaites."

Sales and marketing director Brian Jenkins said the ale is expected to be a big hit in the on and off trade, and would be one of several ways in which the brewery intends to honour its founder and the milestone.

He said: "For a business to celebrate 200 years is a phenomenal achievement, and the most fitting way we can mark it is by introducing a new ale into our portfolio.

"Hopefully it will be enjoyed up and down the country and we expect it to become a very popular product.

"There will also be a whole programme of other events to mark the 200 years and we are hoping that people will really help us to enjoy this occasion - we want to make it as interactive as possible.

"Without giving too much away, there will be several ways in which we will be asking staff and customers to help us to celebrate - watch this space."
