An Aberdeen pub has become the first in Scotland to achieve a Beautiful Beer Award.

Launched in March this year by the British Beer & Pub Association, the Beautiful Beer Awards are designed to recognise pubs delivering 'excellence in beer', and to give pub goers a 'badge of quality assurance' that helps them choose a pub where they can be guaranteed a great beer. So far around 100 awards have been given to pubs across the UK.

Licensees Martin Young and Claire Knox, of the New Mains of Scotstown, received the Gold Award from the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, John Reynolds.

They endured a rigorous 'cellar to glass' assessment in order to achieve the award and receive a Beautiful Beer plaque.

Claire said: "Our newly refurbished restaurant and award winning chefs produce high standards of fresh food, to appeal to all palettes so the beer has to meet the same expectations, which I'm sure our customers would agree."

She added: "We pride ourselves on the quality of our beer so it's brilliant to get independent recognition for it. When we came to the pub about 10 months ago, we said we wanted to become known for serving great beer in a friendly atmosphere and winning this award proves that we've achieved what we set out to do."

Presenting the award, Mr Reynolds said: "Martin, Claire and their team have clearly invested time and effort in ensuring that the beer they serve is always top quality, and they deserve to win this first Beautiful Beer Award in Scotland."
