Best burgers in the business

The search for England's Best Beefburger has ended with a win for a Wiltshire pub.

Tony Robson-Burrel, licensee of the Wheatsheaf at Oaksey, Wiltshire, won the Catering category of the Beefburger Challenge with a rump steak burger created for the pub's menu.

The contest, organised by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) in association with sporting charity SportsAid, set out to find England's best mince beefburger. Entrants were challenged to develop recipes for a 'supreme beefburger' that was low in salt and fat and high in succulence, tenderness and flavour.

Other winners were Ben Parker from Frank Parker Butchers of Warwickshire in the Manufacturing category, and Brian Fawcett from Gilmoor Foods, Harrogate, who won the School Meals category with as Yorkshire Dales burger.

Hugh Judd, foodservice project manger for EBLEX and one of the five judges, said: "We were really impressed with the quality of the burgers submitted and particularly delighted that all of the winning burgers are not only well balanced but they also met all the required Food Standards Agency standards for burgers.

"All the burgers which reached the final were tasty, tender and of exceptional quality but the winning burgers were just that little bit extra special. Each of the category winners had obviously worked really hard in their quest to create England's Best Beefburger, and we believe they have succeeded."

Each of the category winners will now be presented with a crystal trophy and certificate of excellence from EBLEX as well as a sporting experience of their choice up to the value of £500.
