S&N launches Jaques fruit cider

Scottish & Newcastle is rolling out its new fruit-flavoured cider Jacques across the UK from February. The 5.5% abv cider, served over ice, will benefit from a £4m support package including sponsorship, advertising, consumer sampling and in-outlet support. "We feel confident that Jacques will be well received, particularly by women and their partners looking for a refreshing alternative to wine," said marketing manager Stephen Mosey.

Cherry Tree saved from extinction

The Cherry Tree in Kettering, Northamptonshire, has been saved from closure after the licensees raised £10,000 to keep it in business. Owners Charles Wells had decided to close the pub after deciding electrical work that needed to be done was not viable. The pubco will now pay £20,000 for remaining repairs. Licensees Gary Heronsby-Smith and Sandra Devine met at the pub nine years ago and have run the venue for eight months.

Northants police push for glass ban

Northampton is the latest town where police are pushing for a glass ban. Sergeant Mark Worthington said he wants to see every licensed premises using only polycarbonate glasses after midnight by 2008. Since January 2004, 198 violent attacks involving glass were reported in Northampton town centre. Worthington will present his campaign to Northampton Pubwatch on 27 February.

Varsity pavement plans opposed

Barracuda Group's Varsity in Bolton has met with protest from local traders over its plans to put patio furniture outside. The venue has applied for permission from the council to use a new pavement for five tables and chairs with barriers to form an enclosure. The plan is to create more of a café culture in the town. However, local traders are reportedly upset at the plan as they fear a rise in anti-social behaviour.

Ash Tree greets World Cup hero

Fuller's Ash Tree pub in Ashford, Kent, greeted 1966 World Cup-winning hero Martin Peters last week. Peters hosted an evening celebrating the beautiful game, complete with a pub quiz. The Carling Cup, which will be contested by Arsenal and Chelsea, was also on display at the pub. Customers all had the chance to have photographs taken with Peters.
