Daniel Thwaites has held a string of roadshows designed to inform its licensees about the smoking ban.

The brewer has also produced a brochure which it says will clarify the new legislation and address the "mounting confusion" ahead of July 1st.

Tenants, Steve and Janine Robinson from the Lighthorseman in York, which hosted a seminar, found it invaluable. Steve said: "Before we attended the presentation we did have concerns about the smoking ban as we found the legislation difficult to understand.

"Thwaites has done a great job of preparing us for it and getting everyone together in plenty of time to explain the ins and outs of the ban.

"We now feel happier about the looming ban and can see the opportunities rather than the threats that lie ahead."

Paul Howarth, retail director for Thwaites said: "We wanted to demonstrate the fruits of the work that we have done over the last 12 months at Thwaites, researching the issue in depth and then using our expertise in different areas to offer some solutions.

"As well as the practicalities of dealing with the ban, such as signage requirements, potential fines and our investment plans, we have also talked about the opportunities that exist and the training programmes we can offer to add value for customers.

"We've always said that we will invest in our pubs, people and brands and the roll out of our action plan to deal with the new is an essential part of moving forward and that does not just mean developing external smoking facilities at all our pubs.

"There is much more to it than that, and our investment on these seminars, the booklet and training courses emphasises how strongly we believe that. This is not just about sticking up a bus shelter in your garden and hoping for the best - our message it that anyone who does that is missing out on other opportunities."

The Morning Advertiser is holding it's own Smoke Ban Roadshows.
