Did you do anything to celebrate St George's Day on Monday?

Dominic Kiziuk

Sun Hotel

Lancaster

We were caught out a bit this year and had no real time to plan anything before we realised 23 April was catching up with us. We normally have special beers provided by the Lancaster Brewery and try to put something different on for customers. It was a Monday so it's always difficult to estimate how people will support you on a quiet trading day. In the event, we were quite busy so it was a bit of a shame.

We staged an all-day celebration on the Sunday because we knew Monday might be a bit difficult. We decorated the pub and put on special entertainment and we had a really busy time - people really enjoyed themselves. We also stocked Bombardier, which went down very well, and if sales hold up we may stock it permanently.

We had a fantastic time. It was more of a weekend than a celebration confined to the day itself, so we started on the Friday night. We had a marquee in the garden and served up 200 roast dinners with English beef on the Sunday, when customers also enjoyed a 1940s singalong. The weekend was themed on traditional English food and it went down well with everyone; our special BBQ Dragon Burgers were very popular. We did not do too badly on the Monday itself, so all in all it was great.

We had the main celebration on the Saturday, which featured a special English hotpot and entertainment with songs from the Vera Lynn era. We left all the decorations up on the Monday and again we were quite busy so we got two days out of it. I have to doubt, however, whether St George's Day will ever take off properly. When some people arrived and saw all the decorations they asked whether England was playing a football international!
