Agent: Fleurets

Corrinne and Mike Gamble have been at the Chequers in Marsfield for nearly a month.

Both are new to the trade. Mike will continue as a part-time software developer and Corrinne, who previously worked as a midwife, will run the pub full time.

Corrinne will be assisted by five full-time and seven part-time staff who have stayed on at the pub.

"It was something we'd always talked about and my job was getting very stressful," she said. "I worked in pubs and clubs when I was younger and had a great time. It is exhausting, but I knew it would be demanding as we have 17 letting rooms to cope with."

The couple has reserved £100,000 for decoration, but they are limited in the type of work they can do as the building is Grade II-listed. Built in 1734, the business was originally a coaching inn. The pub attracts corporate trade from nearby industrial estates as well as a healthy local trade.

Corrinne said: "The pub has just been bumbling along until now - it needs a bit of TLC, but we think we can raise the trade significantly". The couple also plans to make the food offering a little more eclectic.

The premises is tied on beer and the trade split is 60% wet, 30% dry and 10% accommodation. The pub is being leased from Powder Train, a south-east-based pub company.

The leasehold was sold by Fleurets off an asking price of £160,000.
