Robert Humphreys, PASS chairman and parliamentary beer group secretary, was this year's recipient of the BII's prestigious Bill Hannon Award.

The Award recognises the hard work that goes on behind the scenes for BII and is awarded to those who give their time on a voluntary basis.

Robert Humphreys has been an active supporter of BII and an ally in its activities in promoting social responsibility and good practice within the industry for many years.

He works tirelessly on the PASS scheme and performs his Chairmanship with clarity, humour, common sense, energy and enthusiasm​John McNamara, BII chief executive.

He is secretary of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group and also the unpaid chairman of the Proof of Age Standards Scheme Board (the PASS scheme).

John McNamara, BII chief executive, said: "Robert Humphreys is an unstinting champion of the industry and has been a supporter of BII and our members for many years.

"He works tirelessly on the PASS scheme and performs his Chairmanship with clarity, humour, common sense, energy and enthusiasm and has helped to steer the organisation through its crucial phase of development."

He added: "It is true to say that his drive and enthusiasm has ensured the scheme's ongoing high profile and success and, he is a worthy recipient of the honour of winning a Bill Hannon Award."

The BII also announced ten new Companion Members.

Companion Membership (CMBII) is the highest accolade for BII members who have made an outstanding contribution to BII and to the industry as a whole.

This year's CMBIIs:Marcus Harborne and Carolyn McFarlan from the world of licensed retail training. Marcus is also the secretary of BII Thames Valley region.Suzanne Nolan rewarded for her work in the Wessex Region.Vicky Crossingham, Human Resources Manager, St Austell Brewery, instrumental in the company achieving the first BII NITAs Supreme Award. The award reflected the positive impact St Austell Brewery has in the local community.Richard and Jacque Macey, 2006 BII Licensees of the Year, for their hard work in promoting the licensed retail sector as a valuable career path and work in social responsibility.Ali Carter, previous winner of BII Licensee of the Year, for her inspirational work in widely promoting the sector.Peter Grieve and Francis Patton, long serving BII National Council members.Colin Wheeler from the Licensed Victuallers School was awarded an Honorary Companion Membership.
