England's top doctor has added his weight to calls for higher tax on alcohol. Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer for England, told The Daily Telegraph he would "strongly recommend" the use of tax as a deterrent to excessive drinking. He also said a ban should be considered on alcohol sponsorship of sporting activities and fitness-linked events. "I worry about the overall problem of alcohol misuse," he said.

London brewer and operator Fuller's has reported a 5.4% increase in invested like-for-like sales across its managed estate for the 16 weeks to 21 July. Uninvested like-for-like sales in its managed division climbed 4.3% during the period. Fuller's said its tenanted pubs and hotels continued to make progress in line with expectations, while its beer company volumes continued to show growth.

Scottish & Newcastle UK has announced that Sarah Warby, currently its UK innovation director, has been appointed marketing director. Warby joined S&NUK in 2004, initially working in innovation and new product development, and also as marketing manager for Foster's. S&NUK acting MD Tim Seager said: "Sarah brings a great deal of experience and knowledge."

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has cleared a cinema ad for Jack Daniel's after a complaint that it was not suitable to be shown during Spider-Man 3. The ad, shown during the 12A-rated film, featured still images of Jack Daniel's distillery workers with the caption "Paris got fashion, we got whisky". The ASA said the film was unlikely to attract an audience of more than 25% under-18s.

Archers Brewery has been bought by a private investor and has come out of administration. The Swindon brewer, which hit financial problems earlier this month, is now owned by John Williams, a local businessman. Although Archers has continued trading since the administrators were called in, uncertainty over its future had caused concern for customers.
