"Cretinous," was how one source close to the company described the idea that John Dunsmore was put in place as Scottish & Newcastle's new chief executive in order to fend off a bid from Danish brewer Carlsberg. "Whatever the board do will be in the shareholders' interest. The succession planning has been going on for more than six months. Dunsmore has impeccable credentials. As well as City experience he has financial, operational and management experience. He has also been running the most profitable part of the company for the best part of five years. Put it together and it's a pretty strong package." But questions still remain as to the timing of the appointment, and what Dunsmore will do when he takes over officially in November. - Scotland On Sunday

Robert Tchenguiz's stakes in J Sainsbury and Mitchells & Butlers were close to falling beneath the price he paid and he faced some uncomfortable margin calls. Even his friends had started to talk about him in hushed tones. However, Tchenguiz is back in the money, the Sainsbury bid is back on track and M&B still insists that it will demerge its property assets. It may go down as one of the great escapes. There are many others who will wish for the same good fortune, but they are unlikely to be so lucky. - Sunday Times

DJ Chris Evans won't have to go far for his next drink after he splashed out £1.5million on a pub near his country home. And if the BBC Radio 2 presenter wants to invite pals Gazza and Danny Baker round, the boozer comes with eight guest rooms. Multi-millionaire Evans, 40, looked at the boarded up Red Lion in Milford, Surrey, in April and decided to buy it six weeks ago. Marcio Costa, who runs the nearby White Lion, said: "The previous owners went bust - but Chris won't have that problem." However, Evans has hit problems. He wants to build B&B chalets and expand the restaurant. - Sunday Mirror
