While the thoughts of the nation will undoubtedly be preoccupied by the prospect of England's rugby union heroes retaining the World Cup, there's also some mouthwatering football to tempt punters into your pub.

Liverpool, currently a few points adrift of the top three, take on local rivals Everton in the Premier League on Saturday. The Merseyside derby will be contested at Goodison Park, with coverage from 12.00noon on SS1. Star Reds striker Fernando Torres is a doubt, after tearing a muscle playing for Spain.

Four days later, on Wednes-day, Rafa Benitez's side travel to Turkey for their Champions League Group A clash with Besiktas (SS2, 7.30pm).

On Tuesday, Manchester United are also on the road for their Champions League fixture against Dynamo Kiev (ITV1, 7.30pm), while Arsenal host European newcomers Slavia Prague at the Emirates Stadium (ITV4, 7.30pm).

Back in the Premiership West Ham take on Sunder-land on Sunday (SS1, 3.30pm), while Newcastle United attempt to fend off Tottenham Hotspur on Monday. Setanta1 has the action from 7.00pm.

The Rugby World Cup third-place play-off between hosts France and Argentina kicks off at 8.00pm on Friday. Coverage starts at 7.45pm.

The final will be contested in Paris on Saturday (ITV1, 7.45pm). KO is at 8.00pm.

Even between races, Formula One has hit the headlines, largely due to the ongoing rivalry between McLaren teammates Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.

After Hamilton's premature halt in the Chinese Grand Prix, the British rookie will need to fend off Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen if he is to become the first man to win the world title in his debut season.

Watch the conclusion at Interlagos on ITV1. Qualifying is on Saturday from 4.30pm, with coverage of the Grand Prix itself from 4.00pm on Sunday (start time 5.00pm).
