Corporate goal for the year?

As an organisation, BII's key goal for next

year is to stand up for responsible alcohol retailers at this challenging time.

We will be offering all our members business support to continue building their businesses in 2008 and beyond.

Any opportunity for businesses to grow?

There are always opportunities for businesses to expand.

Those who survive in difficult times are those who are constantly developing their businesses.

We will be supporting our members with new ideas through our roadshows across the country and through BII Business magazine.

If there is a downturn in the economy, how bad is it going to get?

I believe that growth will slow, but I do not think we will see an out-and-out recession - provided that the Bank of England and other central banks continue to add liquidity to the money market so that the economy does not freeze.

Our members are tough and resilient and have weathered worse storms in the past. We are not complacent, but will be backing our members every step of the way, through support and superb qualifications.

Where's the light at the end of the tunnel?

The loyalty of the British public to the pub. The pub is part of the wider hospitality industry and offers a community asset as well as entertainment. We need to encourage new customers into the pub to see exactly what they are missing.

If political pressure increases, what's our best form of defence?

Exhibiting a high level of social responsibility and having a high level of pride in the positive impact of the hospitality industry. It is important that the overall role of the licensed trade is realised and that the sale of alcohol is just one aspect.

Biggest challenge your business faces?

Competition for people's time. There are so many alternatives for time-poor people and we want them to get off their sofas and get down the pub. The pub is the safest environment to enjoy alcohol and is also

great fun.

Personal goal for the year?

To reach my target weight and to get to the gym three times a week.

Favourite quotation or business adage?

"If I train them they might leave, if I don't they might stay," Bill Gates.
